Personal Responsibilities
Dave Brubeck's fight for rights and responsibilities serves as an example to youth of today and all of mankind of the great difference one person can make by standing up for what is right and using their talents to promote for the greater good.
"One of the reasons I believe in jazz, is that the oneness of man can come through the rhythm of your heart. It's the same anyplace in the world, that heartbeat. It's the first thing you hear when you're born- or before you're born- and it's the last thing you hear." |
"The sensitive man sits,
Reading the Bible, Exploring the origins of life. Life with its magical beauty, And brilliance. Life without boundaries, Without limitations. My father is sensitive, I can see him now, Reading, lost in a world, Somewhere on the printed page. He is the essence of talent, But he has time to care, And love me." -Poem by Michael Brubeck (one of Dave Brubeck's sons) on his father |
"Dave often said what he wanted to be remembered for was someone who opened doors. This was made public in December of 2009 which was when Dave was the recipient of Kennedy Center Honors and Herbie Hancock stated: 'Dave Brubeck is the reason I don't have a day job. I also received several comments telling me how influential Dave was in giving musicians an opportunity of speaking with their own voices."
-Russell Gloyd, Dave Brubeck's former manager and conductor
